21 September 2023Dementia Action Week is from 18-24 September 2023, which includes World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September.
Dementia Action Week is a major leadership, awareness and advocacy campaign led by Dementia Australia as the peak body for people living with dementia, their families, and carers.
Did you know?
- Dementia is the second leading cause of death of all Australians, and the leading cause of death for women.
- Around two-thirds of people with dementia live in the community.
- Dementia Australia research shows that 81% of those with a loved one living with dementia felt that people in shops, cafes and restaurants treated people with dementia differently.
A lack of knowledge and understanding of dementia may lead to people living with dementia experiencing stigma and discrimination in the community. Dementia Australia is encouraging everyone to act now to make our communities more dementia friendly in Dementia Action Week 2023.
In taking steps towards becoming more dementia friendly, it’s important to ask yourself, how would you like to be treated if you had dementia?
Dementia Australia has outlined 5 actions you can take now to create a dementia friendly future including raising awareness and understanding, making your environment dementia-friendly, looking out for your community and more.

Partnering with Dementia Australia
Heartland Finance has partnered with Dementia Australia since 2018 to support the great work that they do in promoting healthy ageing. We complete the annual Memory, Walk and Jog fundraising event, and have participated in other volunteering opportunities and dementia workshops.
Some of our staff have also become dementia friends to continue to educate themselves about people impacted by dementia.
