10 May 2024For the 6th year in a row, Heartland is proud to sponsor Dementia Australia’s Melbourne Memory Walk and Jog!
Did you know?
- There are an estimated 420,000 Australians living with dementia.
- Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, and will soon be the leading cause of death.
- In 2024, it is estimated there are almost 29,000 people living with younger onset dementia, including people in their 30s, 40s and 50s.
Our staff participate in the Memory, Walk and Jog for several reasons, and Julie from our team was kind enough to share her story. Read it below.
Julie’s story
My stepfather Bruce stepped in and stepped up to be part of a family of five children and a loving husband to my mother many, many years ago. Bruce was an active sports person playing local rugby union and cricket in his earlier years. Being a New Zealander, he is an avid Crusader rugby team supporter and never misses a game. He is very loyal and hardworking and was working with the same company all his life right up to his recent retirement. Bruce is the most loving and kindest person I know.
When we heard about Bruce’s dementia diagnosis, it was quite difficult for our entire family. Especially as Bruce and my mother moved into a retirement village 165 kilometres away from other family members about 4 years ago. We are all now encouraging them to move closer so they may provide a better support network for them both.
The family are trying to come to terms with his recent diagnosis and unfortunately lack information in understanding the impacts on life dementia can have.
I’ve been a proud supporter of Memory Walk & Jog for many years as it’s a professional and personal connection for me.
I believe fundraising for dementia is very important. The Memory Walk and Jog is a great way to communicate with fellow walkers to gain a better understanding and support of the disorder.
Most importantly I would like families to be better informed and understand that dementia is a collection of neurological disorders causing a decline in the brain function. Raising awareness, such as attending information workshops and dementia virtual reality simulation will help families to understand and come to terms with issues as they arise, and not be afraid to reach out for help.
